Tesla Motors: Eco Driving is Really Moving
Tuesday September 14, 2010 at 18:30 (rescheduled from August 24)
This year’s Tokyo Concours d’Elegance took place under the theme, “past, present and future” of cars. We can see that the world is moving towards a more eco-friendly attitude, as many companies emphasize the word “eco” when advertising their products. Even in the car industry, we often come across the phrase “eco car tax reduction”. So for this month’s FCC, we are happy to welcome Tesla, the first company to produce a commercial electric car. Kevin Yu, Director of Asia will talk about how the car industry will be affected in the near future as the focus on “eco” intensifies.
Tesla, founded in 2003, is a very young company but its accomplishments have been truly remarkable. The Tesla Roadster, the first production electric automobile has won various awards since its release in 2008. It has set the world distance record of 501km for a production electric car on a single charge during the Global Green Challenge in October 2009. In March 2010, a Tesla Roadster became the first electric vehicle to win the Monte Carlo Alternative Energy Rally and the first to win any Federation Internationale de l’Automobile-sanctioned championship when a Roadster driven by Formula One (and Japanese SuperGT) driver Erik Comas beat 96 competitors for range, efficiency and performance in the three-day, nearly 1,000-kilometer challenge. Today, over 1,000 Roadster’s drive emissions-free in more than 25 countries.
Our speaker, Kevin Yu, arrived in Japan in 2008 from the U.S to lead the Pay-Pal charge, heading up the operations of the micropayment system here. Earlier this year, he changed fields, and joined Tesla as Director of Asia Pacific. As the senior person on the ground here in Asia, he aims to get as many Tesla cars on the road and sees Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore as its first targets.
So join us for an electrifying evening to crystal ball gaze, looking into the future of motoring.
