Delivering the Starbucks Experience in Japan
Tuesday July 27, 2010 at 18:30
Starbucks the ubiquitous coffee store most of us couldn’t live without is on a roll again in Japan, thanks to new products, constant innovations, in-store experiences and a pragmatic review of its operations a few years ago when store growth was phenomenal.
We have the pleasure to have Ms Barbara Le Marrec, chief retail officer Starbucks Coffee Japan speak to FCC on July 27. It’s wonderful to hear from Starbucks at FCC for the first time since they opened in Japan in 1996. What a thrill to hear from such an accomplished manager in such an iconic company.
When Starbucks started, the company was a single store in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market. From just a narrow storefront, Starbucks offered some of the world’s finest fresh-roasted whole bean coffees. The name, inspired by Moby Dick, evoked the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders. In 1981, Howard Schultz (Starbucks chairman, president and chief executive officer) first walked into a Starbucks store. From his first cup of Sumatra, he was drawn into Starbucks and joined a year later. In 1983, Howard traveled to Italy and became captivated with Italian coffee bars and the romance of the coffee experience. He had a vision to bring the Italian coffeehouse tradition back to the United States. A place for conversation and a sense of community. A third place between work and home.
Bringing us up to date, Japan now enjoys Starbucks’ latest product, instant coffee, Via. Japan is the world’s largest instant coffee market so this product has an important role in Starbucks’ future activities in Japan. Starbucks sells Via through its 870 stores in Japan and eventually will expand distribution to include grocery shops and other retail channels, very new outlets for Starbucks. The launch of Via coincided with a new focus on growth in Japan.
Our guest speaker is Barbara Le Marrec, chief retail officer Starbucks Coffee Japan and a member of the Starbucks Coffee International Leadership Team, leads Retail Operations, Operations Services, Store Development and Store Planning for Starbucks Coffee Japan. Her responsibilities include oversight of the day-to-day operations and support of the 870 retail stores, new store growth, and maintaining and enhancing the operating condition of the existing store portfolio.
Prior to joining Starbucks, in 1983 Barbara owned, operated and successfully built Chez Dominique, Inc., a European style cafe and bakery, from concept into an award winning regional favorite. Outside of work Barbara is a proud mother of two young adults, a member of CARE Nepal, and Strengthening Action for Empowerment of Women through Economic Opportunities (SAEENO) project which aims to improve the livelihoods of poor, vulnerable and socially excluded women.
So come join FCC for some insights into what’s in store for Starbucks Japan and hopefully enjoy a tasty Starbucks coffee after dinner.
Kindly note as always that no shows will be charged as we have to pay for your meal whether you show or not.
